Contemporary art, kunsthalles and project spaces

Galleries

The most underused free culture in every city on this list. Push the door, say hello, look for as long as you like, leave without buying anything.

Commercial galleries are shops that happen to hang museum-quality work, and like shops they cost nothing to enter. Nobody will approach you, nobody expects a purchase, and the person at the desk will hand you a price list if you ask for one. This is the fastest way to see what art is doing right now rather than what it did eighty years ago.

Kunsthalles sit between the two: no permanent collection, a curated programme, usually a small ticket. They take the risks that museums cannot and often show an artist a decade before the museum across the road does.
