About cinalia

cinalia is an independent culture guide. We queue ourselves, we say what things cost and we never sell a recommendation.

A guide for people who travel for a programme

cinalia started with a habit that turned out to be common: booking the exhibition before the flight. We wanted one place that tells the truth about culture in the cities we keep returning to, from the encyclopaedic museums of London and New York to a converted power station in Lisbon, with the prices, the opening hours, the dress codes and the ticket tricks that the venues' own websites bury three clicks deep.

How a venue gets in

Every venue in this guide meets three conditions: it has a character of its own, it programmes at a level that justifies a detour and it works for someone visiting the city for the first time. We name the price level, the signature work and the best hour, because a museum at eleven on a Saturday is a different building from the same museum at seven on a Thursday.

No paid recommendations

Nobody buys their way into cinalia. A few houses are cinalia partners, which means we work with them on their presentation and say so on the entry; the partner badge marks them clearly. The text stays ours. Opening hours, prices, directors and programmes change quickly, so please check the venue's own information before you travel, and tell us what we got wrong at info@cinalia.com

The tools

Culture Finder, Festival Planner, 48 Hours, Night Roulette, City Duel, Culture Budget, Museum Time, Era Matcher, the Bucket List and the quiz run entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us and nothing is tracked. You share results yourself, as a link or as an image.

Images and videos

The mood images on cinalia illustrate our topics and were made for this guide. They do not show the specific buildings, works or people described unless the entry says so, as with our partners, whose own photography we use with permission. No image on this site is a reproduction of a copyrighted artwork.

Who we are

cinalia is published by NexTao GmbH in Düsseldorf, a digital agency with a long habit of leaving the office for a matinee. The editorial team writes in English for an international audience.
