Chelsea gallery district

Around two hundred galleries in old warehouse floors, all free, all changing every six weeks

Gallery New York, Chelsea€€€

Thursday evening openings, when the whole district pours wine at the same hour

The galleries moved from SoHo to the western edge of Chelsea in the 1990s, taking over warehouse and garage floors between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues from 18th to 27th Street. What accumulated is the densest commercial art district in the world, with the largest dealers running spaces the size of museum wings.

Everything is free. Nobody will greet you, ask what you want or expect anything, and a price list is available at the desk if you ask for one. The High Line runs above the district, which makes the walk between blocks part of the visit.
