Amsterdam: air, green space, movement, prevention

Index 41·82.3 years life expectancy·35% green

Amsterdam is flat, wet and built for bikes: 36 percent of trips are cycled, the Vondelpark and the Amsterdamse Bos are the lungs, and a Dutch habit of walking and cycling in rain keeps residents moving through 1,700 sunshine hours.

Average conditions: here your own lifestyle counts more than the surroundings.

cinalia suggests

  • Bike as default: the city is flat, the network complete, and a Dutch bike is exercise you do not notice.
  • Amsterdamse Bos: a forest three times the size of Central Park, for long runs and rowing on the Bosbaan.
  • Herring and whole grain: the Dutch diet has the Nordic strengths; the fried snacks are the weakness.
  • Rain is no excuse: Amsterdammers cycle through it, and so should you.

Life expectancy and care

Amsterdam reaches 82.3 years, level with the Dutch average. The university medical center and a strong general practitioner system with a gatekeeper role secure care with 3.4 outpatient doctors per 1,000 residents. Waiting times for specialists are the weak point.

Air, green space and water

Thirty-five percent of the city is park, canal and forest. The Vondelpark sits in the middle, the Amsterdamse Bos and the Waterland polders at the edge. The fine dust value of 10 micrograms meets the EU target, helped by wind and the small share of cars in the center.

Movement and daily life

Thirty-six percent of trips are cycled, in rain and wind, by everyone from toddlers to pensioners. Twenty-seven percent of residents are in a sports club, rowing, hockey and football lead. The Dutch diet is Nordic in its strengths, herring, whole grain bread, dairy, and Dutch in its weaknesses, fried snacks and stroopwafels.

What the city gets right

Amsterdam turns transport into exercise more thoroughly than almost any city. Whoever cycles daily, runs in the Bos and keeps the fried snacks for Saturday has a healthy city under the wheels.
