Kødbyen galleries

The white meatpacking halls, now a dense block of galleries, bars and studios

Gallery Copenhagen, Vesterbro€€€

Thursday openings, when a dozen spaces pour wine at the same hour

The city's meat trade moved out of the white 1930s halls behind the central station and the galleries moved in, followed by the bars and restaurants that always follow galleries. The result is the densest concentration of contemporary art in Denmark inside four walkable blocks, all of it free to enter.

The spaces range from established commercial galleries to artist-run rooms with a two-week programme. Nothing is labelled in a way that helps; walk in, look, walk out.
