Palazzo Grassi

The last palace built on the Grand Canal before the republic fell, now a contemporary gallery

The central courtyard staircase, which Ando left alone and lit from above

Completed in 1772, a few years before Venice stopped being a republic, and bought by Fiat in the 1980s for exhibitions before passing to the Pinault collection in 2005. Tadao Ando renovated it with the restraint he later applied to the Dogana, leaving the eighteenth-century shell and inserting neutral surfaces inside it.

It usually runs a single-artist show across the whole building, which suits the palace structure better than a group exhibition would.
