Zurich: air, green space, movement, prevention

Index 63·84.0 years life expectancy·45% green

Zurich pairs the highest life expectancy of any European city with a lake you can swim in, mountains an hour away and the densest medical care of the twelve. Wealth, clean air and a habit of moving outdoors do the rest.

Good conditions with a few weak spots, usually air or doctor density, which daily habits can offset.

cinalia suggests

  • Swim in the lake: the badis along Lake Zurich are open from May to September and cold-water training in the months between.
  • Uetliberg before work: 400 meters of climb with tram access, the city’s hill training.
  • Use the care density: 4.5 doctors per 1,000 residents means short waits for check-ups, skin and bowel screening.
  • Watch the pace: Zurich works long hours; sleep and breaks are the levers the environment does not supply.

Life expectancy and care

With 84 years Zurich leads the twelve cities, level with the Swiss national figure and almost five years above the United States. The university hospital, a dense network of practices and 4.5 outpatient doctors per 1,000 residents make care the best of the twelve. Incomes and education are high, and screening is used as a matter of course.

Air, green space and water

Forty-five percent of the city is forest, meadow and water: Lake Zurich, the Limmat, Uetliberg and Zürichberg. The fine dust value of 8 micrograms is low for a European city, thanks to trams, bikes and a strict emission policy. Lake and river are swimming water in summer and cold-water training in spring and autumn.

Movement and daily life

Twenty-eight percent of residents are in a sports club, twelve percent of trips are cycled, and the Alps lie an hour away by train. Hiking, skiing, swimming and running along the lake belong to all classes. The sun shines 1,700 hours a year, less than in the south, but the light in the mountains makes up for it.

What the city gets right

Zurich shows what wealth invested in prevention looks like: clean air, swimmable water, short distances to care. Whoever guards sleep against long working hours and uses the lake and the hill has the best conditions of the twelve.
