Mental exhaustion: recognizing burnout before it becomes one

7 minute read·

Exhaustion no weekend repairs, cynicism toward work, the feeling of achieving nothing anymore: burnout develops over months. Which warning signs count, what separates it from depression and which steps help in which order.

In short

  • Burnout has three dimensions: exhaustion, distance from work, reduced performance.
  • Early signs: sleep that does not restore, irritability, withdrawal, more alcohol and screens, forgetfulness.
  • The order of help: secure sleep, reduce load, movement, people, professional help after four weeks.
  • Depression and burnout overlap; hopelessness and loss of interest belong in medical hands.

What burnout is

The WHO describes burnout as a result of chronic workplace stress that has not been managed, with three dimensions: exhaustion that no sleep and no weekend repairs; growing mental distance from work, cynicism, indifference; and the feeling of achieving and being able to do less. It is not a disease in the strict sense but a state that can turn into depression, anxiety disorder and physical illness. And it does not hit the weak but often those who have given the most.

The warning signs

Physical: sleep that does not restore, waking at three, tension, headaches, digestion, frequent infections. Emotional: irritability, impatience, tears out of nowhere, indifference to things that once mattered. Behavioral: withdrawal from friends, more alcohol, more screen, less sport, postponing tasks you used to do at once. Cognitive: forgetfulness, concentration problems, the feeling that the head is full and nothing goes in. Whoever has four or more of these signs for a month should act.

The order of help

First, sleep, because without it nothing works: fixed times, no screen after 9 pm, no alcohol, phone out of the bedroom. Second, reduce load, visibly: hand off tasks, cancel appointments, a talk with the manager, if necessary a sick note. Third, movement, 30 minutes outside daily, not as performance but as medicine. Fourth, people: a conversation with someone who listens, not with someone who gives advice. Fifth, professional help if it does not improve after four weeks: family doctor, psychotherapy, occupational health. Waiting times for therapy are long, so start early; an initial consultation is usually available within two weeks.

Burnout or depression

Both overlap. Burnout is tied to work and improves when the load falls; depression stays on vacation too, takes joy from everything, not just work, and brings hopelessness, guilt and sometimes thoughts of not wanting to live anymore. Such thoughts belong in medical hands immediately, and crisis lines are reachable around the clock, in the United States at 988, in the United Kingdom at 116 123.

What has to be different afterwards

Whoever comes out of a burnout and resumes the same life comes back. The question is not how to endure more but what changes: working hours, responsibility, availability, boundaries, movement, sleep. Often it is two or three structural changes, not a different character.

Frequently asked questions

Does vacation help against burnout?

Briefly. The recovery effect of a vacation is gone after two to four weeks of work if nothing changes at work. Vacation is a pause, not a solution.

Do I need a sick note?

If sleep, concentration and mood are so impaired that work no longer works, yes. A sick note for exhaustion is not weakness but the step that prevents worse.

How long does recovery take?

With early intervention weeks, with advanced burnout months. Whoever changes the causes comes back faster and for good.
