Acute stress is healthy, chronic stress makes you ill: high blood pressure, belly fat, sleep disorders, weak immunity. How to recognize chronic stress, which eight measures measurably calm the stress axis and which only distract.
In short
- Chronic stress keeps cortisol and the sympathetic nervous system permanently active; the consequences range from belly fat to dementia risk.
- The strongest antidotes: movement, sleep, breathing, nature, social contact, boundaries, less news, less alcohol.
- Stress can be measured: resting heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep, irritability, concentration.
- Distraction through screens, alcohol and sweets lowers the feeling but not the stress hormones.
What stress does in the body
Stress is an alarm reaction: the hypothalamus activates the adrenal glands, adrenaline and cortisol rise, pulse and blood pressure go up, sugar is sent into the blood, digestion and immune system are throttled. For an exam or a sprint that is perfect, afterwards the system switches off. Chronic stress is an alarm that does not end: cortisol stays high, the sympathetic nervous system runs permanently, and the body pays with high blood pressure, belly fat, insulin resistance, bad sleep, frequent infections, irritability and over years with a higher risk of heart attack and dementia.
How to recognize it
In the body: resting heart rate above your own normal, low heart rate variability, tension in neck and jaw, digestive problems, falling asleep from exhaustion and waking at three. In behavior: more coffee, more alcohol, more sweets, more screen, less sport, fewer people. In the head: concentration problems, forgetfulness, irritability, the feeling of never being done. The cinalia stress check asks about these signs and classifies them.
Eight measures that work
First, movement: 30 minutes of endurance lower cortisol more durably than any relaxation exercise, strength training works similarly. Second, sleep: seven hours are the condition under which everything else works. Third, breathing: five minutes at six breaths per minute, exhaling longer than inhaling, switch on the parasympathetic nervous system; measurable on the pulse. Fourth, nature: twenty minutes in green lower cortisol in studies by 20 percent, without sport. Fifth, people: a conversation with a friend dampens the stress reaction more than being alone, loneliness amplifies it. Sixth, boundaries: an end of the workday with a time, a phone that lies in another room at night. Seventh, limit news and social media: constant exposure keeps the alarm on. Eighth, reduce alcohol: it lowers the feeling acutely and raises cortisol and pulse at night.
What only distracts
Series, scrolling, sweets, a glass of wine: they lower the stress feeling for an hour and leave the hormones untouched or raise them. The test is simple: do you feel recovered afterwards or only numbed? Recovery is movement, sleep, nature, people, stillness.
When it is not enough
Whoever is exhausted for months, no longer sleeps, withdraws or loses joy has no stress problem but possibly a depression or a burnout. That belongs with the family doctor or psychotherapy, and the earlier, the shorter.

Is stress always bad?
No. Acute stress with recovery afterwards makes you more resilient: sport, cold, challenges. Harmful is the permanent state without recovery.
What is heart rate variability?
The variation in the intervals between heartbeats. High variability means the parasympathetic nervous system is active and the body is recovering; low means alarm. Trackers measure it at night, the trend over weeks is meaningful.
Do adaptogens like ashwagandha help?
Small studies show slight effects on cortisol and sleep, the quality of preparations varies and liver problems have been described. Movement and sleep work more strongly and more safely.
