Eighty percent of visible skin aging comes from the sun, not from years. What is dermatologically proven, from sunscreen through retinoids to vitamin C, what collagen powder and 200-euro creams cannot do and which habits keep skin young from within.
In short
- UV radiation causes the largest part of wrinkles, spots and loss of elasticity; daily sunscreen is the most effective anti-aging measure.
- Retinoids are the only active ingredients with strong evidence for wrinkle reduction; vitamin C and niacinamide have moderate evidence.
- Smoking, sugar, alcohol and sleep deprivation visibly age the skin; protein, omega-3, vegetables and sleep help from within.
- Collagen powder shows small effects in manufacturer-funded studies; a protein-rich diet delivers the same building blocks.
Why the sun is the main factor
Comparisons between sun-exposed and protected skin of the same person show it: the difference between face and buttocks at 60 is the sun, not time. UVA radiation penetrates deep and destroys collagen and elastin, UVB causes sunburn and DNA damage. Both add up over decades to wrinkles, pigment spots, loss of elasticity and skin cancer. People who wear sunscreen daily from a young age look measurably younger at 50 in studies than people who use it only on vacation.
Sunscreen as a routine
Daily, in winter too and under clouds, a broad-spectrum sunscreen with factor 30 or more on face, neck and hands. In summer and by the water factor 50, renewed every two hours. Plus hat, sunglasses and shade between 11 am and 3 pm. That protects not only looks but substantially lowers the risk of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. The skin still makes vitamin D, on arms and legs in the morning and evening hours or via capsule.
Active ingredients with evidence
Retinoids, meaning vitamin A derivatives like over-the-counter retinol and prescription tretinoin, are the only active ingredients that reduce wrinkles, build collagen and lighten spots in controlled studies. They need patience, three to six months, and adjustment because of irritation: start twice a week, in the evening, with sunscreen in the day. Vitamin C as a serum in the morning protects against free radicals and brightens. Niacinamide strengthens the skin barrier and reduces redness. Everything else, from peptides to stem cells, has weak or no independent evidence, and the price says nothing about the effect.
From within
Smoking makes skin look ten years older in twin studies. Sugar glycates collagen and makes it stiff; the result is called glycation. Alcohol dehydrates and widens vessels. Sleep deprivation shows after one night in dark circles, after years in elasticity. What helps: protein as building material, omega-3 for the barrier, vegetables and berries for polyphenols, enough water, seven hours of sleep.
Collagen: powder or plate
Collagen peptides show slightly improved skin elasticity after twelve weeks in some studies; most are small and paid for by manufacturers. Collagen is broken down in the gut to amino acids, the same ones found in chicken, fish, eggs and legumes. Whoever eats 1.2 grams of protein per kilo and has vitamin C with it delivers the skin everything it needs for its own collagen. Whoever likes powder does no harm but should not drop sunscreen and retinol for it.

From what age retinol?
From 30 sensible as prevention, from 40 with a clearer effect. Taboo in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Start with a low concentration and increase slowly.
Does sunscreen block vitamin D production?
In theory yes, in practice hardly: nobody applies it everywhere without gaps, and arms and legs are enough for production. In winter it takes capsules anyway.
Do expensive creams do more?
No. The active ingredients with evidence cost 10 to 30 euros or dollars at the drugstore and pharmacy. The price pays for packaging, fragrance and advertising.
