Spain sits in Europe’s top group for life expectancy and is forecast to overtake Japan by 2040. Olive oil, legumes, fish, the evening stroll and a health system with family doctors who know their patients make the difference.
The short answer
Mediterranean food, sun and the daily paseo carry a long life; the smoking rate and the siesta culture with late meals are the weaknesses. The lesson: olive oil, legumes, walking.
What you can adopt
- Olive oil as the main fat: four tablespoons a day, cold over vegetables and salad, cut heart attacks by around 30 percent in the PREDIMED study.
- Legumes three times a week: lentils, chickpeas, white beans are the cheapest longevity ingredient.
- Adopt the paseo: walk 30 minutes after dinner, ideally with someone, it lowers blood sugar after the meal.
- Use the sun, protect the skin: Spaniards get vitamin D on the way to the café, in high summer with shade and sunscreen.
Life and daily routine
Spaniards live to 83.3 years, women almost 86, and the curve keeps pointing up. The country has a public health system with family doctors who sit in the neighborhood and have known their patients for years, a dense structure of plazas and streets lived on foot, and a climate that pulls life outdoors. The evening paseo, the shared walk after the meal, is the Spanish version of endurance training.
Food
Spanish cuisine is the classic Mediterranean diet: olive oil, vegetables, legumes, fish, nuts, little red meat, wine in moderation. The PREDIMED study from Spain is the most important nutrition study of the last twenty years: it showed that a Mediterranean diet with olive oil or nuts cuts heart attacks and strokes by about 30 percent. The weaknesses of Spanish daily life: lots of bread, late dinners and a smoking rate of 22 percent.
Movement and community
Spaniards walk because the city allows it: baker, market, bar and plaza lie within walking distance. Older people do not sit at home but on the bench in the square, play dominoes, go dancing. The family is safety net and daily life at once, and loneliness in old age is rarer than in Northern Europe.
What we can adopt
Olive oil as the default fat, legumes as the default dish, fish instead of sausage, the walk after dinner as a rule. And conquer the city on foot: whoever takes the small trips in the neighborhood reaches their steps without trying.
For travellers
Mercados for fresh food, tapas as small portions instead of big plates, water with the wine. Avoid the midday heat, spend the evening on foot.

Why is Spain so far ahead?
Mediterranean diet with olive oil, a strong primary care system, lots of everyday movement, social inclusion in old age and a sunny climate that pulls people outside.
Is wine part of the secret?
No. The advantage comes from olive oil, legumes, fish and movement. Moderate wine with food does less harm than drinking without food, but alcohol is not a health remedy.
Is the siesta healthy?
A short midday nap of 20 minutes, yes. The late, heavy dinner at 10 pm that often goes with it, less so: it disturbs sleep and blood sugar.
