After eight weeks the scale stands still although nothing has changed. Why that is normal, which four causes lie behind it, how to tell them apart and which steps move things on, without eating even less.
In short
- A plateau of two to three weeks is normal: water, glycogen and digestion mask fat loss.
- Four real causes: needs have fallen, portions have grown, everyday movement has dropped, or sleep and stress are braking.
- Do not eat less, measure: a week of logging, waist instead of scale, count steps.
- A diet break of one to two weeks at maintenance resets hormones and is no step backward.
Why the scale lies
Fat loss is slow and steady, the weight on the scale is not. Water swings by one to two kilos with salt, carbohydrates, cycle, training and sleep. Glycogen stores bind three grams of water per gram. After a hard workout the body holds water for repair. Whoever loses half a kilo of fat a week can see the same weight for three weeks and still be on track. So: weekly average instead of daily value, waist and clothes as a second measure.
The four real causes
First: needs have fallen. Whoever is ten kilos lighter burns 150 to 250 calories less a day, and the original deficit has shrunk. Second: portions have grown. After weeks the eye shifts, the olive oil gets more generous, the nuts become a second handful. Third: everyday movement has dropped. In a deficit the body unconsciously saves movement, you sit more, gesture less, take the elevator. Fourth: sleep and stress. Six hours of sleep and a stressful month raise cortisol and hunger and hold water.
Finding the cause
Log honestly for a week, every meal, every bite, with a kitchen scale. Compare the week’s steps with those from the start. Look at sleep. For most people the log shows 200 to 300 calories that have crept in and 2,000 fewer steps.
What helps
Not eating even less, that drives muscle loss and hunger. Instead: portions back to the level of week one, steps back to the old level plus 1,000, check protein and bring it to 1.6 grams per kilo, keep or start strength training. If that brings nothing after two weeks: a diet break of one to two weeks at maintenance, without restriction but without slips. It lowers cortisol, raises leptin, refills glycogen and makes the next deficit effective again. Studies show that people with diet breaks lose more fat in the end than people who push through.
When nothing moves at all
Whoever loses nothing in two months with an honest deficit has thyroid and blood sugar checked. Some medications, beta blockers, antidepressants, cortisone, also brake. And sometimes the plateau is the healthy goal: if the waist is right and the strength is there, the weight is right, even if the head wanted another number.

Should I have a cheat day?
A planned day at maintenance can help psychologically. A day with a 2,000-calorie surplus wipes out a week’s deficit. Better a whole week at maintenance than one day without limits.
More cardio against the plateau?
More endurance brings something short-term, but the body often offsets it with less everyday movement and more hunger. Steps and strength are the more stable path.
Is the weight gone after the diet break?
During the break weight rises by one to two kilos from glycogen and water, not fat. After a week back in deficit they are gone again.
