The Shed
A building with a telescopic shell that rolls out on rails to double its own size
The McCourt, created when the outer shell slides over the plaza next door
Opened in 2019 with a commissioning brief rather than a collection: it exists to make new work across art, music, theatre and dance rather than to display anything. The building, by Diller Scofidio and Renfro, has an outer shell on gantry wheels that rolls out over the adjacent plaza in five minutes, creating a hall the height of a six-storey building.
Nothing here is permanent, which means checking the programme before you plan a visit and accepting that what you see is unlikely to exist anywhere else.
