Punta della Dogana

The old customs house at the tip of the island, stripped back by Tadao Ando

Museum Venice, Dorsoduro€€€€

The triangular brick shell with Ando's concrete box inserted inside it

Venice's seventeenth-century customs house sits on the triangular point where the Grand Canal meets the Giudecca, and had been derelict for decades when François Pinault took a long lease and hired Tadao Ando to convert it in 2009. Ando removed later additions, left the brick and the roof trusses visible and inserted a concrete enclosure inside.

The result is the best contemporary exhibition space in Italy, showing work from the Pinault collection at a scale the palazzi cannot offer.
