Hollywood Bowl

Seventeen thousand people, a shell in a canyon and a tradition of bringing your own wine

Arena Los Angeles, Hollywood Hills€€€€

The picnic before the concert, which is as much the event as the music

A natural amphitheatre in a canyon north of Hollywood Boulevard, in use since 1922, with a band shell that has been rebuilt several times and seating for about seventeen thousand on benches and boxes up the slope. The Los Angeles Philharmonic plays a summer season here and the rest of the calendar mixes film scores, jazz and touring acts.

Alcohol and food may be brought in for most concerts, which has produced a picnic culture of considerable seriousness. People arrive two hours early with tables, candles and wine, which is the local way of going to a concert.
