Walt Disney Concert Hall

Frank Gehry's stainless steel sails, with acoustics that justify every photograph

Concert hall Los Angeles, Downtown€€€

The vineyard auditorium in Douglas fir, designed with the acoustician before the shape

Lillian Disney gave the money in 1987, the building opened in 2003, and the delay was worth it: Gehry and the acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota designed the interior first and wrapped the steel exterior around it, which is why this is the rare landmark building that sounds as good as it looks.

The hall seats about two thousand in vineyard terraces of Douglas fir, and the organ, with its bundle of splayed wooden pipes, looks like a dropped packet of fries and is a serious instrument.
