The season-closing concert in June, ending in the dark with sparklers across the whole bowl

Built into a natural hollow in the Grunewald forest for the 1936 Olympics, the amphitheatre seats more than twenty thousand on stone terraces with nothing but trees behind the stage. It works better than any indoor arena in the city because the setting does the atmospheric work that lighting engineers usually have to fake.

The Berlin Philharmonic closes its season here every June, an evening that traditionally ends with the Berliner Luft march, the audience whistling along and sparklers lit across the entire bowl. Tickets for that one night go on sale the previous autumn.
