Stedelijk Museum

Everything after 1870, in a nineteenth-century building with a white bathtub attached

The Malevich holdings, the largest outside Russia

The national museum of modern and contemporary art added a fibre-composite extension in 2012 that the city immediately nicknamed the bathtub, and which does what it was meant to do: put the entrance on the square and free the old building for hanging. The collection covers design as seriously as painting, with Rietveld, Dutch graphic design and a Malevich group that came to Amsterdam in 1958 and stayed.

It is the least crowded of the three Museumplein institutions, and the only one where you can reliably see a major collection without booking ahead.
