The Troubadour

A five-hundred-capacity room on Santa Monica Boulevard where a great deal of American music started

Live room Los Angeles, West Hollywood€€€€

The balcony, which looks straight down at a stage a metre off the floor

Open since 1957, first as a coffee house and then as the room where Elton John played his first American show, where Carole King and James Taylor performed regularly, and where the Los Angeles singer-songwriter scene of the early seventies effectively lived.

It holds about five hundred, the balcony wraps around three sides, and the booking still favours acts on the way up rather than nostalgia tours.
