MMCA Seoul

The national contemporary museum, built low inside a palace compound

Museum Seoul, Samcheong€€€

The courtyards, which keep the building below the roofline of the palace next door

Opened in 2013 on the site of the former defence security command, next to Gyeongbokgung palace, and designed to stay low so that the palace roofline survives. The result is a set of galleries around courtyards, mostly underground, with a restored red-brick building from 1930 kept at the entrance.

It is the flagship of a four-site national museum and programmes Korean contemporary art alongside international exhibitions, at a ticket price of a few euros.
