LACMA

The largest museum in the western United States, with a field of street lamps out front

Museum Los Angeles, Miracle Mile€€€€

Urban Light, 202 restored cast-iron lamps, free to walk through at any hour

A campus rather than a building, currently rebuilding a large part of itself, with holdings of about a hundred and fifty thousand objects across Korean, Islamic, Latin American and European art. The collection is broad and the Latin American holdings in particular have no equal in the United States.

Two outdoor works have become the public face of the place: Urban Light, a grid of two hundred and two restored street lamps at the entrance, and Levitated Mass, a three-hundred-and-forty-tonne boulder suspended over a walkway. Both are free and both are open when the museum is not.
