Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

A low modernist museum threaded through a sculpture park above the sound to Sweden

Museum Copenhagen, Humlebæk€€€

The Giacometti room, with a glass wall on the water behind the figures

Knud Jensen opened Louisiana in 1958 in a country house north of the city and then extended it as a chain of low glass corridors that thread through the park rather than dominating it. The idea was that art, architecture and landscape should be experienced as one thing, and it is the most successfully realised version of that idea anywhere.

The collection is strong on postwar European and American art, the temporary programme is ambitious for a museum of this size, and the sculpture park runs down to a bluff above the water with Calder and Henry Moore among the trees.
