Coachella
A polo field in the desert that sets the year's festival aesthetic for everyone else
Two identical weekends on a polo field two hours east of Los Angeles, with enormous production, large-scale art installations and a headline policy that has repeatedly defined the pop year. It is expensive, extremely hot by day and cold at night, and the camping is an experience of its own.
Its influence is out of proportion to its size: the staging, the art commissions and the set design get copied by festivals worldwide within two seasons.
