La Mercè
Barcelona's city festival: human towers, fire runs, giants and free concerts for four days
The city's patron saint festival, with a programme of Catalan traditions that visitors rarely see otherwise: castellers building human towers eight levels high, the correfoc in which devils run through the streets with fireworks, gegants parading and a castle of fire on the beach.
Alongside it runs BAM, a free music festival across several squares, which makes the whole thing one of the largest free cultural programmes in Europe.
