Día de Muertos

Altars, marigolds and a parade that only exists because of a film

31 October to 2 November FreeFree to attend

A pre-Hispanic observance fused with All Saints, recognised by UNESCO, in which families build altars with marigolds, photographs, food and candles for the dead and spend the night in cemeteries with them. The mood is celebratory rather than sombre.

The large parade through the centre of Mexico City is a recent invention: it was staged for a James Bond film in 2015, the public liked it and the city made it real the following year.
