Village Vanguard

A wedge-shaped basement that has recorded more famous live albums than any room on earth

Live room New York, Greenwich Village€€€

The Monday night big band, playing here every week since 1966

Max Gordon opened it in 1935, it has booked jazz since 1957, and the list of live albums recorded in this basement includes some of the defining records of the music. The room is a triangle holding about a hundred and thirty people, with the stage in the narrow end and acoustics that engineers have never fully explained.

The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra has played here every Monday since 1966, which makes it the longest-running weekly gig in jazz.
