Philharmonie de Paris

Jean Nouvel's aluminium hill on the edge of the périphérique, with a hall that floats inside it

Concert hall Paris, La Villette€€€€

Balconies that wrap the orchestra so that no seat sits behind another

Opened in 2015 at the north-eastern edge of the city on purpose, as a deliberate move of cultural investment away from the centre. The exterior is a clad hill of interlocking aluminium birds; the auditorium inside is suspended, with balconies wrapping around and over the orchestra so that the audience surrounds the sound.

The programming is broad, from the Orchestre de Paris to jazz and world music, and the museum of music in the same complex holds an instrument collection worth an afternoon on its own.
