Leopold Museum

One ophthalmologist's obsession with Schiele, now the largest collection of him anywhere

Museum Vienna, MuseumsQuartier€€€€

The Schiele rooms, which tell the story of a four-year career

Rudolf Leopold bought Schiele when nobody wanted him, starting in the 1950s, and assembled the largest holding in the world before selling it to a state foundation in 1994. The museum opened in 2001 in a white limestone cube in the old imperial stables and shows Vienna around 1900 more completely than anywhere else: Schiele, Klimt, Gerstl, the Wiener Werkstätte.

The MuseumsQuartier around it holds mumok for contemporary art and the Kunsthalle for temporary shows, with a courtyard that the city uses as a public living room from April onwards.
