Salzburger Festspiele
Six weeks of opera, concerts and drama in a small Baroque town that doubles its population
Founded in 1920 by Max Reinhardt, Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss, and still the most prestigious summer festival in classical music, with three main houses including one carved into the rock of the Mönchsberg.
Jedermann, the Hofmannsthal morality play, has opened the festival on the cathedral square nearly every year since 1920 and is performed outdoors, weather permitting.
