International Film Festival Rotterdam
The counterweight to the glamour festivals: first and second features, no red carpet
Founded in 1972 as a deliberate alternative to Cannes and Venice, Rotterdam programmes first and second features, experimental work and film from regions the larger festivals overlook, and funds a good deal of it through its own production fund.
There is no competition for stars, the venues are ordinary cinemas across a rebuilt port city in midwinter, and the discovery rate is the highest of any festival in Europe.
